ADAMS COUNTY DARE PROGRAM

Since 1989, the Adams County Sheriff's Office has been highly involved in school-based policing. One of the many programs taught in the unincorporated schools is the DARE Program. We have graduated thousands of 5th grade students in the DARE curriculum and are one of the few Denver area agencies to still provide this service. We have brought the GREAT Program, i-SAFE America, Project Prince, Scared-Straight, Project 7th Grade, Commitment to Excellence, Law Related Education, Hooked on Fishing – Not on Drugs, Alive at 25, Every 15 Minutes, and several other programs into our schools. All School-Based Deputies are highly involved in community events, after school recreation centers, and student safety committees.

In 1992 the Adams County Sheriff's Office initiated a School Resource Deputy program. The Sheriff’s Office was one of the first agencies in Colorado to incorporate this concept into our community and continue this valued partnership today. Three deputies are assigned to three middle schools and one high school in Adams County School District 50. 5 deputies are assigned to teach the DARE Program in 7 elementary schools (in three Adams County School Districts) on a part time basis. All School Resource Deputies have obtained the highest level of training through the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO). The School Based Policing Unit supervisor, Sgt. Jon VanZandt, is an award winning instructor for the National Association of School Resource Officers and continues to educate police officers across the United States in this field.
