All motor vehicles and trailers owned or operated by a Colorado resident must be registered.
Colorado residency is established when one of the following criteria is met:
- Own or operate a business in Colorado
- Reside in Colorado continuously for 90 days
- Obtain employment in Colorado
- Obtain Colorado Driver License

All applications for vehicle registrations must be made at the Motor Vehicle office in the county you reside. Click here for a list of the Adams County Motor Vehicle Office locations. Criteria used to establish residency in the county is:
- Primary place of residence; used when registering a personal vehicle; utilizes the same laws and regulations that apply to voter registration
- Business address; used when registering a business vehicle that is in the business name
- When the place of residence or business does not apply, the address where the vehicle is primarily domiciled and maintained may be used.

Vehicle Purchased by Cash
When a vehicle is a cash purchase from either a dealer or a private individual you must bring the title and any applicable documents properly assigned to you and proof of emissions. As of July 1, 1999 proof of Valid Vehicle Insurance is also required.
If you have a set of license plates you want to reissue to your newly purchased vehicle, bring the registration for those plates.
Financed Vehicle
If the vehicle is financed the dealership or your financial institution will file the necessary documents with Adams County. (If the vehicle was purchased from an out of state dealer or you arranged your own financing with an out of state financial institution the required documents may be sent to you. If that is the case it is your responsibility to file the required documents to title and register the vehicle.) Upon acceptance, the application will be processed and Adams County will mail you a post card. You must bring this card, proof of emissions, and proof of Valid Vehicle Insurance to one of our office locations to purchase your license plates.
Licensing an Out of State Vehicle by New Residents
If you are a new resident to our state you will need the following documents to register your vehicle:
If this is a new purchase from out of state and never registered this will be treated as either a Cash Vehicle Purchase or Financed Vehicle.
License Plate Renewals:
As a courtesy to our residents, all Colorado counties send out renewal notices for currently registered vehicles. Plates can be renewed either by mail or in person at one of our offices.
To renew by mail:
- Verify the information on the renewal notice.
- If you've moved out of Adams County, contact your new county of residence.
- If you've moved to Adams County from another Colorado county your fees may differ; please contact our office for the correct fees. Please be prepard to provide your license plate number, vehicle information and new Adams County address.
- If a new emission test is required, include the proof of emission.
- Include proof of insurance.
- Make check payable to Adams County Clerk.
- Make sure the check is signed.
- Mail to Adams County Motor Vehicle, P.O. Box 5011, Brighton, CO 80601
- Please allow 14 days processing time.
- If received after the one month grace period, the fees will differ and the renewal will be returned to you.
To renew at one of our offices:
- Bring your renewal notice or vehicle registration, new emission test if required and proof of insurance.
- We accept cash or check made payable to Adams County Clerk.
- Credit and debit cards are not accepted.
